Concussion Rehabilitation

A concussion is an injury to the brain that can happen with or without a blow to the head.

Most concussions resolve within 1-2 weeks, although some people can experience persistent symptoms after this amount of time. Common symptoms are headache, neck pain, dizziness, feeling “in a fog” and sleep disturbances.

Physiotherapy can be extremely useful in improving concussion symptoms and allowing the person to resume their regular activities. An initial concussion assessment is performed to identify and prioritize symptoms related to a concussion. The physical assessment may include testing of the head, eyes, neck, balance, and/or vestibular system. Treatment is based on assessment findings and will include a combination of education and graded exercise, along with manual therapy, vestibular rehabilitation, oculomotor retraining or acupuncture as required.

Benefits of Concussion Rehabilitation

•     Reduced neck pain

•     Reduced headaches and dizziness

•     Improved balance

•     Improvement of vision symptoms

•     Improved physiological function through graded aerobic exercise

In some cases, it is possible that a comprehensive initial assessment may aggravate symptoms of a concussion or vestibular disorder, so we recommend that you arrange to have someone ensure your safe transportation following the session.
